Artist Tim Ferguson creates pieces inspired from Hawaiian legend. His handcrafted necklaces are shaped from bone, stone, wood and tusk. At some time in the past, many of the materials used existed as a living thing. As an old growth tree, a bull elk, a walrus or a whale. Thousands of years of time have locked the essence into a section of what remains. Sometimes Tim will begin a piece without an end in mind. In this way, what the piece becomes is a complete surprise, even to the artist. As he works with the bone, Tim is looking for what shape the bone wishes to become next, and carves to slowly free that. Each piece is like a tiny statue locked in pillars of rock waiting to breathe again in form. Soon, what used to swim in the Archaic oceans becomes a decorative centerpiece of beauty with a second graceful tail, alive again as something fully transformed. Essence and form are released from the slumber of 30, 200 or 100,000 years.
Every piece is unique. Accenting the main piece are beads from around the world of blown glass, lava rock, shells and amber. Often, the marrow of petrified bone calcifies in a snowflake pattern, adding texture and grace when caught by the light. Some pieces are strong symbols, thick and fluid while others are nearly translucent: graceful and petite. Over time, as the owner wears and begins to establish a relationship with their necklace, the piece will pick up energy and oils from their skin forming a smooth sheen. Known as a patina, this shine brings out the color of the material, the grain of the wood or the glow of the fossil.
